Are you wasting your time on this?

    March 25th, 2008

Would you like to be more motivated?

Every week I receive emails from people telling me they want more motivation. They talk about it like it’s something you can go to the shop and buy: “2 kg of motivation please”.

Now, I don’t know about you but I’ve not seen motivation on the shelves of any shop!

Some people may argue that you can buy motivational stories, films and attend seminars? It’s true these kinds of things can help you get motivated, they may inspire you, and they may even in the right circumstances help you get really motivated!

This is because human beings are social animals; we love stories and we ‘feed’ off each others energy; so being around motivated people is infectious. I bet you have met people who’ve read a book, or who have come back from a training course full of excitement and motivation. You may even have done it yourself.

    What happened?

    March 17th, 2008

There is a fundamental truth at the heart of the personal development and coaching industry that you are not being told, and it’s not what you think!

Success should be easy! There are any number of books, audio programs, DVD etc. telling you how to move forward and be successful in life. There are thousands maybe millions of coaches, trainers and speakers who make a living teaching people how to turn their lives and their businesses around.

Every now and then someone reinvents personal development, usually promising to make it easier and quicker!

So how come there are so many people struggling to achieve the promise of these personal development gurus?

This truth begins to hint at the fundamental truth I’m going to reveal to you now!

If you can do better should you?

    March 11th, 2008

I’m not a career’s advisor but I am frequently contacted by people who don’t enjoy their job but lack the self-confidence to go after something else.

What do you think they should do?

As ever there is no “right” answer, there are many potential approaches some people would say “Get up and walk out!” and maybe for some that’s a great strategy, others would say “Begin to look for what is good about your current job, you can learn to be happy where you are!” Again this can be a useful strategy to experiment with, especially as you already know that you see more of what you look for in life.

Today I’d like you to consider an alternative approach, I’d like to tackle the problem at the root and look at one of the major sources of a lack of self-confidence.

I’d like you to review another example of my initial question:

“If you could do better in a job, should you?”

So you want to live your dreams?

    March 11th, 2008

Few people realise that dreams are a measure of your current potential; I believe that your dreams are a measure of your potential without many of the limits that are currently holding you back.

As babies we are born without limits and we begin to build boundaries around who we are and what we are capable of as we develop.  So in many ways dreaming is a better starting point than the traditional goal setting approaches commonly recommended.

    Why bother really?

    March 11th, 2008

Recently I was speaking to someone at an event and they began to talk about personal development and coaching, they had one question and it’s one I’ve heard a lot over the years.

    Why bother really?

Are you the kind of person who thinks you make it on your own?

    March 11th, 2008

Have you ever struggled to make breakthroughs in your results, or to maintain motivation and progress on some project or goal?

If so you’re not alone, experience suggests that many many people struggle for years to overcome procrastination, get motivated and take control of their lives.

One of the most common limitations I hear while coaching, is people saying that they just can’t do it on their own.

Can you see how they are holding themselves back?

    Do you know the secret?

    March 11th, 2008

There seems to be a great deal of publicity for the DVD “The Secret” and more generally “The Law of Attraction” all over the internet at the moment.

It seems people are waking up to the fact that, what you focus on, you tend to create in your life.  Speaking to you as someone who understands the power of taking control of your life, I’d reinforce this message wholeheartedly.  You really have the power to create almost anything you truly want in your life and are creating your experience of life with your thoughts every moment of every day.

However, my experiences speaking to people about this over the last few months have led me to believe that many people are missing a crucial detail.

    Have you ever procrastinated?

    March 11th, 2008

If you answered yes, chances are you’re not alone. If you answered no, then chances are you may well be. The truth is that almost everyone in the modern world has procrastinated around some things.

I say modern world, because I’d be very surprised if people in the developing world procrastinate anywhere near as much as us in the developed world.

Procrastination in many ways is a luxury.

What can Google teach you about your life today?

    March 11th, 2008

Which is your favourite search engine?

    Is it Google? Yahoo?

Have you ever considered that search engines are a really interesting way to see the power of your own mind?

How many times have you heard people saying things like: “You see what you’re looking for”?

Or: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t you’re absolutely right?”

Now while it’s easy to accept this on a conscious level, for most people that is as far as it goes.

Squirrels always get their nuts!! (A lesson in motivation)

    March 11th, 2008

I grew up alongside our local park and our back garden was always heavily overhung with chestnut trees and oak trees. As you can imagine this was great for a young kid, as every autumn there was always a huge supply of conkers to thread and play with.

However, my dad wasn’t quite as keen because it always attracted numerous squirrels!

As everyone knows squirrels really like nuts, especially squirrels, and the squirrels that lived in the trees around us were no exception.

Now my dad is a pretty good guy and it’s not that he begrudged the squirrels the nuts that fell in our garden. What he didn’t like was they way they didn’t discriminate. Those squirrels knew what they wanted and they were very very clear it was nuts they wanted and they weren’t overly bothered whose nuts they were.

For most of the year there weren’t enough nuts falling from the trees and that mean’s these squirrels got creative!
